New Stargate Video: Experiment
My first non-Farscape vid and the first vid I ever posted here at LJ. It takes from the original Movie and both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The song was written by Cole Porter for a 1933 musical. It's sung by Mandy Patinkin, who's an eccentric song stylist when he's not an eccentric actor.

If you'd like to see it, you can download a version I updated in April 2009 here: Experiment

Congratulations, you got it up! I knew you could!

I'm also really proud of you for branching out into other fandoms. How does it feel? When I branched out into Smallville, it was strange at first but now that I'm in more fandoms, vidding somehow feels more complete. There are more things you can do and experiment on (no pun intended).

Great vid! The song seems to fit the theme very well. I don't know SGA at all and only know some of SG1 because of Ben, but I remember enjoying the movie years ago. I really like your ending on Daniel's smiling and the bright light behind. These shows look good together and you did a nice job!

Make sure you join some vidding communities and post it up. You can probably also post it to Stargate communities. Direct them back here for the link and feedback.

ah Lev!!! thank you so much for your kind words....and for watching this. i know you're not a "gate" fan but i felt the song had a universal message, so that if the images weren't too "fannish" it could work for the non fan.

vidding a different fandom....how does it feel? it feels liberating actually. i love farscape so much that the vids seemed to flow out of me for a while - so many ideas, so many themes suited so many of my favorite songs - and i really worried that maybe my muse was "farscape only" and what if i couldn't vid anything else. i think this vid alleviates that concern a bit, so i'm really relieved. i still have one or two farscape vids in production, and will always love/adore it, but there's only so much i can make the images say......i hope that the fandom attracts some more newbie vidders, full of the energy and passion that we all had during our farscape heyday, so that there are still some more great farscape vids in the future.

thanks also for your patience in guiding me through the ins and outs of LJ. i've already joined a few communities (did that last night!) and will post the link to "experiment" in them this evening.

*bounce* ohhhh.....

Welcome to the world of SG vids *g*

This is so well done, great mix of these two shows. Everything fits just perfect. I esp like the one ring scene, and your use of the Gates and the Wormhole. Great choice in music, but I should have figured you`ll come up with a song like this.

I`m with lev when it comes with vidding multifandom. I have so many ideas that just don `t fit for Farscape, or SG-1. So, I`m at a point right now where I have his many (for me) fandoms to choose from for a certain song. I love it when I hear a song and think "BSG!!!", or "SPN!!!"
Actually, one song made me vid BSG in the first place because it fits just perfect IMO, and this vid is next(almost) on my next to do list.

Can not wait to see more of your vids, you always make it look so easy to do *hugs*

hey KJ!!!!!!! thank you so much for your encouragement, support and for your inspiration......your "who let the dogs out" was the final push i needed to finish "experiment" and post it. i just wanted you to see it so badly. and i'm so glad you liked it - tho not sure i know what you mean about the "one ring" scene. i loved mixing the two shows in with the movie and having the james spader/DJ in the same timeline as michael shanks/DJ. tho i gotta say, there's only one daniel jackson for me!!!!

re: multifandom vidding - this song "experiment" is a perfect example. i've had it on my vid playlist for over a year now, and i did try to vid it to farscape but it just doesn't fit with it. but it's perfect for SG. so yes, being able to vid multi fandom permits a greater variety of songs to be used and vids to be made. but it still is a huge task, logging episodes and scenes. i'm trying to figure out a more efficient method than the haphazard one i used for farscape.

i am still trying to track down your BSG vid - and don't worry! i won't give up until i find it. i can't wait to see it. *hugs* thank you all so much!

Hey ya, I have the link for the BSG vid included in the main vid post which you can find here : http://kj-svala.livejournal.com/16640.html I hope you`ll like what you get.

ya, me and my detailed Feedback *rofl* the one scene I was talking about is at 0.55 .Amazing how such a small detail scene gets to me, but at the end I miss the overall deeper meaning most of the time, ha. I also LOVE the opening with the Atlantis team leaving, the wormhole and the blend over to Cam *thud*

you know you make me blush all shades of red, do you ?? I never would have thought someone else would like the Who let the dogs vid this much *hugs you tight*

And I think you also found the main problem when vidding multifandom already. Me, I have the worst memory around. And SG-1 gives me a hell of a time to vid. Maybe this is why I love vidding Cam, only 2 seasons to take care of, hahah.
For each of my vid, no matter the fandom, there is a lot of talking and clip searching going on in the background. So, feel free to ask again, when I can be of help, I`ll do do.
And, I don `t get into any discussion about who the one and only Daniel is, nonono *hugs Michael*. I love the movie, I think James Spader did a great job, but, I learned to love Michael as Daniel *g*

hey there, i sent you a comment on your BSG vid to your journal. gotta say, with you and aruna, i've gotta come to an uneasy truce with Nightwish, don't i?

as for your comments - i would not worry about whether you "get" a deeper meaning in most vids, cause most vids probably don't have one (or if they do, it's not a one-size fits all kind of thing.....one man's deep is another one's shallow, right?) it's what you call "small details" that sum up and pack the vid with a wallop. and personally, i'd love it if each comment could include at least one specific thing from the vid that the commenter noticed and enjoyed. there's hardly anything in my vids that's there purely by accident; so it shouldn't be too hard to find something specific that was memorable, right? so keep on with your small details - and the "one ring" - that's the one time the rings are used in the vid, right? *still looking over my shoulder for Frodo, lol*

you make me so happy with your comments on Experiment (which btw, i made one final revision to it which of course probably only i would notice, but if you redownload [http://blitzed.craisie.com/exp.zip ] see how i make that so easy? i think i perfected the "infinite joy and merriment" part ....cause, y'know, infinite joy and merriment - i wonder what that could be? hee.

i was conflicted as to whether to include Cam at all, because i really wanted not to think about Farscape at all for this one (the first non-FS one) and just seeing Cam would make that impossible. he ended up in 3 scenes in this vid, tho.....can't keep a good Cam down!

thanks for t he offer about specific clips - always vice versa for you also. see i didn't even use that ice cream scene but i tried in the "infinite joy and merriment" sequence, but somehow it didn't seem to come across. so i had to ditch the idea.

Congratulations on your first venture into new vidding terratory and for your first vid on LJ! I just watched it and it's soooo lovely and wonderful. I know barely any SGA at all and SG mostly from having watched for Ben and never saw the movie :( , but this is absolutely lovely. I love the song....goodness, but it is sooo very fitting! All your beautiful overlays and the gorgeous flow you always have...sighhh... is just a joy to see whether I know the footage well or not. Fabulous work! :)

As Lev said, being in more fandoms does somehow make vidding seem more complete.(and I have Lev to t hank for my first venture into Farscape and my first venture out as well!) How well I remember seeing Farscape and vidding as one..just the thought of vidding elsewhere took a long time to seep into my brain, until the pangs to vid Lex in Smallville came over me...and eventually I came to realize vidding was how I wanted to celebrate any show/character that moved me...and it was a glorious thing to feel. That first Smallville vid was extraordinarily invigorating to make. I am so happy you are experiencing this now too. Farscape having been our first flight into this kind of celebration, I think is a very special thing. Farscape is so uniquely beautiful it served as an exceptionally magnificent palette to take those first vidding brush strokes with, not to mention how many doors it opened for me in other areas of my life. It is incredibly dear to me...as I know it is to you. So, here's to Farscape..for bringing us all here!

I'm glad you joined some communities and posted there..I'm so happy for you as you begin your new vidding journies. And those that will be discovering your gorgeous work for the first time are in for one tremendous treat!

PS: I'm so sorry I didn't see this earlier, some unfortunate computer distractions got in the way!

oh my!!!! you're here! you're here! and you've watched my vid!!!! lol, i'm so happy!!!!

thank you for your kind words. i like it when a song's lyrics are not very structured, as this leaves me free to put in my own narrative for the images. and this song has such a universal message, that i could really pry free from the Stargateverse, and just use its images to vid the song. which is to say, hopefully non-fans could watch and enjoy it. as you did, and, btw? yay!!!!!

i did not know that you and Lev pre-date farscape as friends. that's truly awesome. i can't help but envy (a very little!) the way friendships were formed and solidified during the years immediately preceding my intro to farscape and vidding. but i am so looking forward to getting to know you guys a bit better.

i have to agree with you about farscape vidding: i fell in love so hard that it imprinted itself on some primal memory circuit, cause it's always at my fingertips; i never forget where things happened or certain scenes are; vidding FS is organic, coming out of my entire being. farscape is indeed "special" in that sense - what other fandom produced such an outpouring of fan creativity, not just in quantity but in quality and variety as well? well i'm sure there are some. but i don't know of any.

it came as a huge surprise to me how much i enjoyed watching SG-Atlantis and i love being surprised, so i'm returning the favor by vidding it. but i hope soon to find the show that'll make me feel like it's "the first time" i'm really vidding.

as for joining communities, yes i've done a few (stargatevids primarily) to post "Experiment" but oddly, the first one i joined doesn't seem to have a link for posting a vid. there are vids on the page, but no link saying "post a vid". so um. LJ - stumped me again!!!!

Oh this wasnt what I expected - but when do you ever do the expected?? Very unusual stargate vid, great to see scenes from sga and even the original stargate film. I especially like, "interfering friends may frown" and the clip there with sam and the asgaard, "get furious" with Jack smashing the car. Short but enjoyable nonetheless. More please.....

On a general note, you seem to have made friends very quickly here on LJ, much quicker than yours truly, but, ya know, I think you draw people to you, welcome Laurie.xxx

hey sue!!! i guess not all posts to this journal will pop up on aol (which is what i've generally been relying on to clue me that there's new posts for me to look at here). oh, i'm so happy you took a look at this vid. it seldom happens (at least to me) that a vid turns out almost exactly the way i envisioned it, but this video was very cooperative and i'm very pleased with it. thanks for mentioning the bit about the "interfering friends" - this was a difficult one for me to get right. sometimes you just have to clear the mechanism of extraneous thoughts and hunker down to the essentials.

i wonder what you expected? not a crossover? farscape, somehow? *g*

as for my making friends here - mostly these guys are former Terra Firmans (sp?) and great vidders (of farscape, of course, but also DW and smallville among others) and even tho i missed them in their hey days at TF i joined LJ so i could have an on going dialogue with the people who inspire me the most.

Just seen this: http://community.livejournal.com/multividious/8492.html

Seems to me your vid would be perfect...........
blitzed451[info]blitzed451 on March 24th, 2008 06:07 am (UTC)
oh my gosh, thank you so much. i think this would a good vid to enter for this challenge, if only i could see where exactly to post it......that's the thing with LJ - nothing is simple.

but i'll keep looking. how did you find out about this?
[info]earp_girl on March 24th, 2008 02:45 pm (UTC)
There are a fair few vidding groups on tf. Mainly I've found them by browsing other people's journals and seeing where their posts are. So far I found communities called "vidding" "atlantis_vids", multividious, sq_vids_rec, stargatevids, supernaturalvids, the kawoosher, torch_wood, torchwood_files, as well as lots of smaller groups for cam, weir, etc and other characters. the torchwood group is the busiest one i found. Have fun kiddo. x

Hi, butting in to say you might find this list I've compiled useful:
Big List of LJ Vidding Comms

The 3rd grouping lists the fandom-specific ones.

oh no! not butting in at all! thank you so much. this is great. not just for posting, but for finding vidders whose work i've admired but had no way to give feedback. this'll make it so much easier.

fab, thanks so much for this.

That was really unusal. But that's a good thing!

I liked it a lot! I liked the way you paired movements on screen with quiet trills in the music, like the rollerskating(?).
